Dating back to earliest days of cocktail creation, the Old Fashioned came to life in the 1800s, although there is debate about whether it was first served in New York or Kentucky. Its recipes were muddled during the prohibition, when fruit was added to mask the lower-quality liquor being produced, but since then the Old Fashioned found new life across the United States with various customizations and preferences.
This month, Paramount Club takes a new look at the classic drink as Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey comes to the Club to celebrate Juneteenth with a limited-reservation Cocktail Class (followed by a complimentary tasting) in the Game Room. Named after Nathan “Nearest” Green, the brand celebrates Green’s legacy (he is credited with teaching Jack Daniel the art of whiskey distillation), as an integral part of American whiskey history. Here’s what to know before then…
The Essentials
Whiskey is the most common spirit base (though other versions can use Bourbon or Rye) and traditionally, sugar is added in one way or another — whether it be a sugar cube or simple syrup— and is used to soak three-to-six dashes of angostura bitters. To keep it classic, a large ice cube is added with a garnish of orange peel and cherries.
Roots
The drink originated at a private social club in Louisville, Kentucky called The Pendennis Club. Allegedly, a bartender crated the drink in honor of master distiller, Colonel James E. Pepper, who then brought the cocktail to the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City and introduced his drink to industry titans of the time like John D. Rockefeller and William Steinway.
Stirred, Not Shaken
This popular catchphrase holds true for the Old Fashioned. If shaken, extra air and water will be added, which dilutes the cocktail’s strength. Stirring the drink allows for its intended texture, which is smooth and silky.
Built for Ease
Some credit the drink’s popularity with the fact that it can be created directly in a lowball glass, with no shaker necessary. Others have noted its simplicity and versatility, with creative bartenders subbing in everything from tequila and mezcal to garnishes of rock candy.
Join us on June 18th for a special Cocktail Course and complimentary tasting with Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. RSVP here; space is limited.
