Meet Dr. Scott Weiss DPT, Director of Paramount Wellness

With more than 30 years of experience in the fields of physical therapy, exercise physiology and performance coaching, it would be easy to quantify Dr. Scott Weiss’ success through the lens of his clients. But for New York-based Weiss, the Director at Paramount Wellness,  it’s the mentality he brings as a former elite athlete in the martial arts that truly informs his practice; after going to the 1988 nationals and just missing the Olympic trials for taekwondo by a slight margin, Weiss went on to work with the USA Sports Medicine Team for over 25 years, attending three Olympic Games, two Pan Am Games and more than 30 world cup events. “I always say ‘You don’t have to be an Olympian to be treated like one,’” says Weiss, who has worked with everyone from Michael Phelps to Mike Tyson. “That’s really the approach I take. Maybe not working at the same intensity but using the same vastness of modalities and treatments available.”

In working with Paramount Club, Weiss aims to share his philosophies with even more clients, bringing his love of both eastern and western medicine and creating individualized care that blends physical therapy, sports medicine and fitness, a plan that he says is made easier by the amount of data now available to practitioners. “Quantification of performance variables are at the core of what we do,” says Weiss. “Whether it is measuring VO2, ROM, BMR, body composition or hydration levels, insight into the inner workings of the body helps drive our individualized treatment.”

Aside from data, Weiss incorporates everything from cutting-edge rehabilitative techniques to qigong in working with clients, embracing a newer approach to fitness and wellness that takes its cues from his own background in the martial arts (he has a black belt in Tang Soo Do a Korean martial art and a black belt in Japanese jujitsu). The gentler, more individualized focus is something that Weiss says he tries to emphasize to all clients, prioritizing sleep, nutrition, exercise and a strong support system. “Wellness is not this intense, regimented, hard-lifting, intense sweating like we used to think in the seventies and eighties,” he says.
