Olympic Preview: Dr. Scott Weiss On What to Watch in the Summer Games

While Club members may know him as Paramount Club’s Wellness Director, Dr. Scott A. Weiss DPT actually has a long history tied to the Olympic Games, having worked with the USA Sports Medicine Team for over 25 years. Who better than to give members a Paris preview? We sat down with Dr. Weiss to learn more about who to watch, when to tune in and why we should keep one eye on the equestrians.

TPC: What are you most looking forward to in this year’s Olympics?

SW: Being a New Yorker and born in Brooklyn, I’m looking forward to the introduction of breakdancing. The energy required is intense and I can’t wait to see these athletes combine music and dance. I am also excited to see the second year of surfing. Surfing is a hobby of mine and watching these people rip the waves is just incredible. I remember when taekwondo (my sport) was introduced in 1988 in Seoul, Korea.

TPC: Who are the Olympic athletes to watch in this year’s games?

SW: I’m looking forward to seeing Katie Ledecky in swimming; Lee Kiefer in fencing;  Simone Biles in gymnastics; and Ellie Aldridge in sailing.

TPC: What events are looking to be big for US teams this year?

SW: We should definitely pay attention to women’ s soccer, men’s and women’s judo, and track and field as well as boxing. Fencing, sailing and triathlon also sometimes fall off the radar, but are worth tuning in for.

TPC: What would surprise people most about the summer Olympic games?

SW: I would keep a good watch on equestrian and fencing! Parisians love their horses and swords.
